Get Road Bike Ready: New Routes at this Year’s Okanagan Granfondo

It's a whole new roadmap for the 13th annual Okanagan Granfondo. The course for the cycling event — a bike shop favourite — has been revamped, starting and ending at Skaha Lake Park, along with a few other exciting updates.

“I've ridden the course, and I think it's way better than it ever has been,” says executive director Jodi Cross. “It’s going to be a fun course.”

The new route is more scenic, peaceful, and safe, no longer travelling on Highway 97 and eliminating Summerland, Jodi explains.

The new layout also makes for a refreshing new challenge in the five-kilometre timed hill climb on the Granfondo.

“We used to have it in Summerland, but it was really short,” Jodi explains. “Now, it's an actual hill climb, rather than just a sprint.”

For the first time, the race will also be awarding prizes for first, second, and third place for individuals.

For the little ones: Piccolofondo

The weekend kicks off with a ride for the kiddos — the Piccolofondo. The 400-metre to five-kilometre route is free and open to children ages two to 10.

Parents can cheer on the kids at Rotary Park on Saturday, July 12, 8 am - 9:30 am

New package pick-ups in Kelowna

Locals rejoice! For the first time, riders can pick up their packages on the Tuesday prior to the race at our Fresh Air Concept sports store in Kelowna. Package pick-up also happens on the Saturday in Penticton.

The early morning buzz

For Jodi, the best part of the event starts in the early morning calm on the day of, when she gets to experience the atmosphere when 2,000 riders start rolling in.

“We get there so early and start setting up,” says Jodi. “When the cyclists all roll in, and you get that many people lining up, and you can see how far everybody goes, the energy is just — you can feel it.”

Advice for riders

When it comes to tips for the big day, Jodi stresses not skimping on the aid stations.

“It's usually a pretty hot day, and I wouldn't pass those aid stations. I would stop and use them,” Jodi says. “That would be my biggest recommendation. A lot of people don't, and then they pay for it later on.”
