Ski and Board Service Time is Here

Ski Shop Season: Ski and Board Service Time is Here

Can you feel that cool air coming in? Winter is just around the corner, and when the leaves start changing colour, you know it’s time to get your skis or board tuned up at the ski shop. Here’s everything you need to know to get your board ready for first chair at Big White when the time comes from Fresh Air Kelowna’s manager and ski tune expert (he’s been at it since he was 12!) Jonny White.

Check out our ski and board services.

When should I bring my skis in for a tune?

The earlier, the better. The week before the ski hills open is the busiest time of year, so beat the rush!

Do I need to book an appointment?

Nope! Just come on by our ski shop, and we’ll take care of the rest.

How long will you have them?

Turnaround times are usually 24 hours. We have a lot of experienced techs on hand to prevent backups and delays.

How frequently should I tune my skis or snowboard?

Generally, once a year. It’s like an oil change for your car. Once at the beginning of the year, they can be assessed. At a minimum, they should be waxed at the beginning of the season.

The team at the ski shop will check for damage, wax, and sharpen your skis or snowboard.

What happens in a performance tune?

We generally recommend performance tunes. They are a bit more comprehensive. Our techs will sharpen the side edge, base edge, stone grind flat, and look for imperfections. We fill in minor rock damage. Base repairs are included, and if it’s core is shot, or there’s a major repair, we would charge a bit more but communicate that with you first.

How often should I wax my skis?

Whether it’s DIY or you bring them in, skis and snowboards can benefit from a wax:

  • Every ten days out

  • When there are big temperature fluctuations

  • When you get a cold snap

  • When spring skiing starts

Do I need to bring my ski boots in?

No. Boots are only needed if you’re looking for a safety check, or the DIN may need to be adjusted due to a weight or skill level change.

I purchased gear from the ski swap; can you do a safety check?

Absolutely! We’re happy to perform a safety check on your skis or snowboard purchased from the ski swap, free of charge. We would need to charge (and communicate that with you) should any additional work or repairs need to be performed.

What information do you need when I drop off my skis?

Sometimes, you bring in skis for someone else. To do a binding adjustment, we’ll need to know the following:

  • Height

  • Weight

  • Age

  • Skier type (1, 2, 3)

Do I need to wax my waxless cross-country skis?

Contrary to how the name sounds, waxless skis still need to have glide wax applied regularly. Come on into the shop, and we’re happy to explain the process and show you the best products to keep you gliding.

Shop wax and tools.
