Across the Lake: Fresh Air Kelowna Swim Demos Are Back June 15th
Canada’s largest and longest-running open lake swim is back this year. If you can’t wait for the Interior Savings Across the Lake Swim to get swimming, then join Fresh Air Kelowna every week starting June 15th for open water swim clinics and wetsuit demos.
Fresh Air Kelowna swim clinics and wetsuit demos
Open water swim clinics were a huge help for event relations director Kari Baranieski when she first participated in the event in 2016.
“It was a good thing for me to do,” says Kari. “The water was maybe 16 degrees but I went to all of the clinics to get that extra swimming experience and the coaching was amazing.”
Clinics run every Saturday from June 15 until July 13 and start at 7:00 am sharp until 8:15 at the Boyce-Gyro Beach Swim Loop.
Entry is free for those registered for Across the Lake and $5 for those who are not. There’s no need to sign up for the clinics beforehand, just show up at 6:45 am prepared to have a good time. Learn more.
The Fresh Air team will be on hand with wetsuits to demo. The first demo is free, but additional test runs of the same wetsuit are $10.
Every year, Kari sees people of all levels benefit from the clinics, but particularly those who are new to open water swimming.
“If you’re new, nervous, or unsure, the clinics and coaching are so valuable,” she says. “Just come and see what it’s all about, it will make a difference!”
New this year
Across the Lake has added a few new events this year:
-
The Kelowna Two: your choice between a 700m swim from downtown Kelowna and a 1.4 km across Okanagan Lake.
-
Cultus Lake Swim, only an 80 km drive from Vancouver!
For a cause
The proceeds from Across the Lake go to the YMCA Okanagan Swims Program, which aims to drown-proof children by bringing free swim lessons to School District #23 (Peachland to Lake Country).
Funding the program is part of why Kari loves Across the Lake so deeply.
“Everyone involved is amazing and shows up to have a great time while supporting a really good thing in the Okanagan,” she says. “It’s all around such a positive thing you can’t not be passionate.”
