Whether for the workout, the views, or the family time, cross-country skis are one of the best ways to enjoy the outdoors this winter.

An Incredible Workout, Amazing Views, and Fun For the Whole Family: Why You Should Get On Cross Country Skis this Winter

Downhill skiing isn’t the only way to enjoy the outdoors this winter. If you’ve been curious about cross-country skiing, our ski shop is here to encourage you to get out there! The benefits are huge, the barrier to entry is low, and the fun is always sky-high.

Here are some of the best reasons to get out on a pair of cross-country skis this winter, plus the best trails in Kelowna to explore.

It’s a great workout

Cross-country skiing burns more calories than most sports because you constantly use your power and full body to move forward. It’s also low-impact, reducing your chances of injury.

It’s great cross-training

Cross-country skiing is a great winter sport for trail runners looking to keep up their cardiovascular endurance. The American Trail Running Association endorses cross-country skiing for runners thanks to the low impact, high cardiovascular output, strength required, and full body benefits.

It keeps you warm

Say goodbye to the chairlift chills. Using your own body to propel you forward makes cross-country skiing toasty warm. Be sure to dress in layers to regulate your temperature as you go!

It’s accessible

Cross-country skiing is more affordable when you look at the cost of a lift pass. And while prices for cross-country ski gear can certainly climb, the kit and easy trails are much more forgiving, making it easier to borrow the pair sitting in your neighbour’s garage.

It’s fun for the whole family

Being an affordable, low-impact sport with abundant beginner trails close to home makes cross-country skiing fun for the whole family.

Etiquette notes:

  • Always stay in the tracks set for cross-country skis and avoid damaging them.

  • Follow traffic rules: if there’s a left and right lane, stay on the right to avoid oncoming skier traffic on the left.

  • Yield to faster skiers.

  • Some trails are dog-friendly, but not all! Check ahead of time and follow posted rules, such as keeping your dog on a leash.
