A happy swimmer taking part in the annual Fresh Air Kelowna Cherry Blossom Triathlon

Dust Off Your Wetsuits, Kelowna! The Cherry Blossom Triathlon is Almost Here

For co-race director Cory Krist, the Kelowna Cherry Blossom Triathlon, presented by the BC Cherry Association, marks the unofficial start to the race season. It’s a way to bring the local triathlon community together and kick off the upcoming season.

“There’s a community vibe; it's just a fun event,” he says. “It's early in the season, so bring the local athletes together. It's nice to do something low-pressure and see where your fitness is at.”

The Cherry Blossom Triathlon is welcoming to all, whether you’re racing for the first time on a rickety old mountain bike or a veteran triathlete fine-tuning your fitness for the upcoming season.

New this year, the Adult Super Sprint distance (400-metre swim, 14.6 km bike, 3 km run) is a shorter course perfect for those looking to test the waters.

“Even though a sprint sounds pretty short, it’s still daunting for some, so hopefully, that opens the race up to a few more people who want to try it for the first time.”

Registration for the adult and youth sprint has been high, which seems to be in line with the general trend over the years. Registrations have been increasing steadily year after year since the COVID-19 pandemic, reaching a new high this season.

Whether gravel, road, or mountain bike — they’ll all get you to the finish line.

“This is the most we've ever had, and last year was the most prior to that. Whether it’s because of the shorter races, registration just keeps increasing every year.”

For first-timers who are a little nervous, Cory’s advice is simple: have fun.

“Just have fun and enjoy it. The swim is always the most daunting part. Even in the pool, it tends to be stressful for some, but everyone is supportive and there to cheer each other on.”

The Kelowna Cherry Blossom Triathlon will take place on May 4 at the H2O Aquatic Centre, Gordon Drive, Kelowna. Register today.

Not racing this time? Volunteers are always needed (and appreciated!). Sign up to volunteer.
