Is an E-Bike Right For You? Everything You Need to Know About E-bikes

E-bikes have been gaining popularity for a while now, and according to data from Google, interest in the term has only continued to increase over time. If you’ve been curious about an electric bicycle but have been hesitating to pull the trigger, our Fresh Air Kelowna e-bike buyer’s guide may be able to help.

What is an e-bike?

An electric bike is a bike equipped with a motor to give power and assistance when needed. You still need to pedal an e-bike, but most models have different modes that provide varying levels of power to choose from.

How fast can an e-bike go?

Yes, an e-bike will make you go faster with less manpower, but that doesn’t mean they can keep up with a motorcycle or a Vespa. That’s by design. In Europe, the max speed an e-bike can reach is 25km/h, but in Canada, the top speed allowed is 32km/h with a 500-watt max—no need to worry about these rules yourself. The bike motor cuts out when the max speed is reached.

How long can an e-bike ride for?

Distance ranges from 50-100 kilometres. The range changes based on different factors like what mode you’re using, hills, speed, and weight. Most models will clearly tell you how much battery life is left on your ride.

What are the benefits of an e-bike?

There are a lot of benefits to having assistance on your bike.

  • Faster, easier riding.

  • Better for the environment than taking a car everywhere.

  • Make the uphill part of downhill mountain biking a breeze.

  • Less pressure on knees and joints.

What are the downsides to an e-bike?

Some of the downsides include:

  • Electric bicycles are heavier than standard bikes.

  • The battery needs to be charged.
