Open Water Swimming in Kelowna: Gear Up for the Argus Apple Triathlon
By the Fresh Air Team, Based on an Interview with Marty from Fresh Air | July 2026
Open water swimming in Kelowna is no joke! At 135km long, 5km wide, and 232m deep, the Okanagan Lake can be powerful. You may find yourself dealing with wind, chop, and cold temperatures.
Since the Apple Triathlon is coming up on August 9th, we sat down with Marty from Fresh Air to talk about gear, conditions, and the buddy you should never swim without.
How Do You Stay Safe Swimming in Okanagan Lake?
"Train with a friend or a group. Consider the best gear for the distance you're training for or the goal you're setting, goggles, wetsuit, swim cap, fitness monitor. Find a location that's easy to navigate and measure what you're doing, like the buoys around Gyro Beach. And it doesn't hurt to take a few extra steps to make your experience safer by being more visible to boaters, paddleboarders, and even friends keeping an eye on you from shore." — Marty, Fresh Air
Marty's favourite piece of that puzzle is the Swim Secure Tow Float, a bright orange or pink float that trails behind you so boats and paddleboarders can spot you, and doubles as a PFD if you need a breather. Pair it with a brightly coloured cap, and you're covered. Some swimmers take it even further (Marty's seen a helium balloon tied to a wetsuit as a marker, and honestly, why not).
The Lifesaving Society's annual drowning research consistently shows open water incidents outnumbering pool incidents. Visibility gear and a swim buddy show up again and again as the difference between a close call and a real emergency
The Argus Apple Triathlon
Kelowna's Argus Apple Triathlon landed the 2026 Triathlon Canada National Championships for Sprint, Standard, and Standard Aquabike. The country's top age-group racers will hit the lakeside course this summer, and a spot on the podium comes with more than a medal.
Apple Race also hosts a Kelowna marathon in September.
August 9, 2026: Race day! Three qualifying spots per age category (Sprint, Standard individual, Standard Aquabike) punch a ticket toward Age Group Team Canada.
2027: Qualifiers who claim their spot through Triathlon Canada race at the World Championships in Hamburg, Germany.
What Gear Do You Need for Open Water Swimming?
Here's what's in Marty's bag:
Goggles, with a seal that holds against your face
Wetsuit, for open water specifically
Anti-chafe stick (Body Glide is his go-to)
Fitness or heart rate monitor
Thermal gloves and cap for cold open water conditions
Fit matters more than brand here. A wetsuit that's wrong for your stroke will fight you the entire swim. Fresh Air's swim shop fits wetsuits and goggles in person as part of their service.
Who Swims the Lake in Kelowna?
Ask Marty who he talks to at the shop or the lake, and he lights up a little.
"People I chat with, both in the store and at the pool or lake, are always very enthusiastic and excited about their next event. Many are long-time competitors. Some are new to the sport and the challenge of learning a technique sport. Some are happy to have a sport that's low-to-no impact, that they can stay fit with, when other activities are too hard on their bodies." — Marty
Three types tend to show up: veterans chasing a personal best, first-timers still learning to sight a buoy, and people who switched to swimming because running or cycling stopped being kind to their knees.
When Can You Swim Outside in Kelowna?
"Outdoor swimming, depending on the seasonal weather, can stretch from early June to late September. If you're keen and have a thermal swim cap and gloves, along with a wetsuit, you can stretch it out an extra month on each end of the season. Those of us not so dedicated to open water specifically will hit the pool of choice for fall and winter. The H2O Centre is my pool." — Marty
Four months outside if the weather cooperates, five if you're willing to wear gloves in a lake in October. Yikes!
Meet Marty, Fresh Air's Swim Guy
Marty's been swimming for over 30 years, and by his own account, he didn't start as a "natural". He's finished 3 full Ironman races, 2 half-Iron races, and lost count of how many Olympic and sprint triathlons somewhere along the way.
This year's event was the Cherry Blossom Triathlon, a sprint distance, which he signed up for specifically to see if he could still beat his kids… He couldn't (his kids will be happy to tell you so).
