This Father’s Day, Conquer the Lake with Fresh Air Kelowna
If you’re looking for Fresh Air Kelowna on Father’s Day, you’ll find us running, connecting with the community, and probably even tasting a little wine at the annual Conquer the Lake race on June 16 in Lake Country.
Every year, the race seems to grow bigger and bigger, says race director Jennifer Andrews, and as it grows, the more it has to offer.
“I’m excited about being able to bring more to the community,” she says.
Responding to demand from last year, Conquer the Lake has added a 10k fun run to the lineup (that’s in addition to the half marathon, 5k fun run, and kids 1k), a kids station for post-run activities, and loads of support from local vendors.
Scenic Sip will return with post-race wine samples, while Rosehill Orchard will showcase goodies from the orchard along with baked goods and jams.
“It's so heartwarming to have that community involvement and businesses like Fresh Air Kelowna that share our vision with supporting fundraising,” Jennifer says.
Keeping kids in the game
Since taking the helm of the race two years ago, Jennifer has focused on supporting a different organization that helps youth stay in sports. This year, proceeds from the race will go to the Grindstone Award Foundation, which provides financial support for youth female hockey.
As a physiotherapist, Jennifer has always loved working with youth and youth athletes, but she’s also aware that youth sports have become prohibitively expensive for some.
“I think about the kids who can't afford to play. Physical activity and sport are good for so many things, not just the physical benefits but also socialization, good mental health, and keeping kids out of trouble,” she says.
“I've always loved the idea of supporting kids to play and not just sit on the sidelines.”
Volunteering and registration
The race starts with the half marathon at 8 a.m. on June 16 at Beasley Park in Lake Country.
For those who want to support the community without running, Conquer the Lake is always looking for volunteers. Register to run, learn more, or volunteer today.
See you June 16!
